06 silverado p0449 code

I own a 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 2WD. Just recently my check engine light came on. The night before I got the code my driver information center told me to tighten my fuel cap. I checked it and it was already tight. I took the truck to Autozone and the code p0449 came up. I have done some research and one of the first things I have done is change the fuel cap. I have also found out that on these newer vehicles if you top of the fuel tank repeatedly (which I have had a habit of doing) the fuel can acutally saturate the vent canaster. Apparently this is a fairly common problem with GM vehicles. One thing I am not sure about is that if the light came on while my fuel cap was already tight, what could that mean? I would appreciate any input anyone has on this topic.

Re: 06 silverado p0449 code

Welcome to AF, I am moving this to the proper Silverado forum below. Second, that code does not refer to a gas cap issue but to a vent valve or solenoid issue on the vapor cannister.

I have seen your problem with a 2005 sil. the owner would fill to max and then not drive very far ...this damaged the vapor cannister unit.

for him at the time it was under warrantee.

if you plan on parking the vehicle for a time do not fill tank to the max....esp on rising temps....it is possible this may clear as the charcoal gets purged..

Re: 06 silverado p0449 code

I know that it may have been a total coincidence that my DIC told me to tighten my fuel cap the night before my check engine light came on, but I was also wondering if this could possibly clue me in on something. I would think that a tighten fuel cap message was some indication that my fuel tank lost pressure. What little bit of research that I have done on this topic, I know that there is some component in the EVAP system that is attached to the fuel tank. Could a malfunction in this component cause my fuel tank to loose pressure and cause the message telling me to tighen my fuel cap? I may be way off in left field about this...aside from routine maintenance I'm really not sure about the systems on these newer vehicles.

Re: 06 silverado p0449 code

you are not supposed to overfill your tank...this will cause problems as you have ...

yes the tank has a very set computer controlled pressure /purge system so as to keep the tank at a slight vacuum....on shut down vapors get stored into the cannistor...If you overfill liquid gets sent to cannister this then causes problems like you have..it is not designed for liquid...this problem may go away with not over filling...as the vapor/liquid slowly gets purged from the charcoal...BUT it is written that if the cannister is filled with liquid it should be replaced..

the other components could also be damaged but hopefully not..

Re: 06 silverado p0449 code

j cAT, thanks for the input. I have actually read somewhere that when the system fails, the majority of the time it is cannister or the hoses. Is changing the cannister something that someone with average mechanical abilities can do or would you suggest getting someone with some know how? This question is for anyone to answer.

I would contact the dealer . this is I believe a emissions componet that has a longer warrantee..

DO NOT SAY YOU ALWAYS OVERFILL THE FUEL TANK....

because of its location and the hoses it is not so easy a job...

on a lift it would be fairly easy...

Re: 06 silverado p0449 code

I was wondering if anyone knows what different year models and types of GM vehicles have EVAP parts compatible with mine? My truck is a Chevy Silverado 1500 2wd with the 4.8L V8. I am thinking about going to a junkyard to get the parts I need I may need. Hopefully they'll be good, and a whole lot cheaper than the dealer.

so you got price shock aye....someone has to bail out GM....

whenever the part is supplied by GM only,, the markup is about 300%...

I would give it some time to correct itself before spending any money..

with winter here later there may be some scrap yard parts ...

this is something you must do...you will soon find the GM only wants your money..if they make a defective part/design they then jack up the price on the defect part cure..

I will be waiting for your results good luck....

Re: 06 silverado p0449 code

I had a P0449 code on my 2008 Silverado crew cab and used ACDelco 214-2082 Canister Solenoid Valve Kit to fix it. I did not need to use 5/8 heater hose as others have used, because with a little bit of silicon spray and a bit of wiggling and pulling, I was able to get the original hoses off in reusable condition. However, I did cut off the hose connectors on the bad solenoid valve and crushed them in a vise, which made it much easier to get them out of the hoses.

The valve is located in front of the gas tank under the middle of the truck on drivers side.
