Hello,
How can I find out what transmission my car has?
Is there a code in the vin?
I need to know if a AX4N will fit in my 96 3L 24v duratec car.

Re: 96 Transmission type?

I've got a '97 Vulcan which is a bit different than yours. My tranny type is embossed on the pan. If you get underneath the car and look up, the pan has "AX0D" in large letters punched on it. I think "AX0D" is the equivalent of the "AX4S" transmission. I guess the Vulcans came with the AX4S and the Duratecs came with the "AX4N" tranny???

Re: 96 Transmission type?

Yes, Vulcans (except for those with the police or heavy duty package) came with the AX4S (which says AXOD Metric on the pan) and all Duratecs and police/HD package vulcans got AX4N's (which say AX4N on the pan).
