drive shaft

So last night driving home on the interstate, my driveshaft decided to break. towed it to a shop and they have quote me 1k which is ridiculous. they quoted the drive shaft at $794. my question is how much do you think i could pick one up in a junkyard for? also are any of the blazer / jimmy shafts interchangeable with the bravadas. I'm selling the car as soon as i get it fixed because i am sick of ALWAYS having to replace something and could have boughten a much nicer vehicle for the amount of time and money i have sunk into this thing.

Why did it break?
Did you let the joints get bad?

Yes some of them are that price.

Make the bone yard your best buddie on getting on.
But check to be sure they have any.

i was a little mis informed as to what broke. apparently it was the front shaft that broke and it sounds like the joints were bad and simply failed. it did bend my linkages but not that bad. The shop told me i could drive the vehicle with the front shaft out but advised me not to do it for to long. now im going to school for auto mechanics and its a 40 min drive from where i live. my plans are driving it down there finding a used shaft and replacing it myself. save a lot of money hopefully. does driving it sound like a bad idea though? they informed me they asked a company that rebuilds the trasnfer cases and trannys on these vehicles.

It will not hurt anything.
Just leave it in 2 wheel.
And be sure to remove all of the old drive shaft.
And check all damage it done under there.

794$ is a little high for a front shaft.
If no luck on good use one check on a rebuilt or new aftermarket shaft.
I have say some for 2-3 hundred dollars.

its a 97 bravada so awd. ya, i found one new online for $400 so im hoping to find a used one around 200 maybe

AWD you need it to drive it.

I have a 97 Bravada and I have been driving mine without the front shaft for about a year. It is fine to drive it without the shaft. You just won't have 4WD, so remember that if you are driving in the snow!!!!

On the old style you can do that.
But the new style you can not do that without damage to transfer case.

97 can go either way.
Is your a electronic controlled transfer case or old style?
But either one it is safer to have it on there.

it's the old style thats always in AWD and ill only be driving it for a short amount of time. just waiting on the part.

The front drive shafts from '96 and up can be used. I would not drive without the shaft, not such a good idea for a AWD transfer case. Also if I remember correctly, the shaft yoke actually seals the case from dirt and oil escaping, so if thats the case, that also would make it a bad idea to drive without the shaft.
