Stop Light Problems

I just bought my first cadillac (94 Deville 4.9L) a buddy of mine noticed the other day that my brake lights werent working. My third brake light and the tail lights dont come on, though at night the lights come on just dont work but dont become brighter when my foot is on the pedel..ive researched threads on here and seen that it my be a brake light sensor/ stop light sensor? Would this be correct?

Re: Stop Light Problems

Yes, there should be a brake light switch mounted just above the brake pedal itself.
You would want to test this switch before replacing it. It should have 2 wires. One wire should have power when the engine is running (brake not depressed) and both wires have power when the pedal is depressed.
Post back here with the results of the test.
If the switch checks out okay, the problem is elsewhere. If there is no power to the switch, check the appropriate fuse.

wasnt the sensor though idk if any one knows what this is but im gonna explain..In the tail light bezel there is a wire below the brake light buld (black rubber peice, has a wire inside that is inside a plastic tube). The passenger side one wasnt in all the way i pulled them out cleaned them and replaced, well i now have brake lights durring the day but at night they dont become brighter. Any one have a clue?

Re: Stop Light Problems

Are you surethe ground is good and try testing the socket that the bulb goes in with tail lights on. A good test light should work. You may also need a voltage meter so you can get idea of the voltage back there should be battery voltage. You should have two hots and a ground .
