New Member Question: How To Post Pic's?

Pretty basic question. This is my first post. After reading the 5 year old paragraph on uploading pics in the FAQ I'm more confused than ever. I'd like to start a progress thread but need a quick (and current) brief on pic's uploading. Thanks, Crate.

Crate try it http://photobucket.com/, http://www.imageshack.us/ or another photo storage web site, after upload the pictures copy and paste the IMG Code into your thread.

I appreciate the helpful reply AAlmeida. I had a feeling you guys were all using offsite image hosting after looking at the dearth of recent image postings in the AF gallery. Regards..Crate.

It's been some years since AF's image hosting worked reliably. It was rather limited by size, and several free offsite hosting services long ago surpassed what AF was offering. Since then, admin hasn't given it much attention, assuming that everyone has gone to other services, and likely wouldn't go back even if the AF service began working again.

OK, I'm making progress. I have a photobucket account and an image in it. I've tried linking it in a post here and apparently didn't pick the right one because all I got in my new thread is a red "X". Photobucket offers no less than 7 link variations for each image. What's the correct link to use on AF? (Wow, this is a wobbly start. Sorry 'bout that.)

IMG code is what you want.

The address for the hosted image should appear between two [IMG] blocks.

Rats! It keeps doing that. I verified I had the [IMG] on both ends of the link that time and it did the same thing. Here is what I pasted: "" Is this the right syntax even? Crate.

Well I'll be dipped! It worked when I just pasted the link into the text without the "insert image" button. From the size of the pic I guess I need to link thumbnails and start cropping my pic's.

Yes, when using Photobucket you don't need the insert image button. The insert image button places the [IMG] blocks around a pic address, but Photbucket already supplies them. Just paste the IMG code on Photobucket straight into your post and it works fine.

Crop your images a bit (standard size tends to be 800 x 600), but don't link from thumbnails. No one wants to bother having to click to see an image since placing images straight in posts works.

OK! I think I'm getting the hang of this. I went back and resized the photo to 800x600 in my photobucket account and the image is now a friendlier size in the post above. Thanks for your help MPWR!
