It sounds like a bad starter. Have someone turn the key to start and hold it there .Then go under the hood and tap the starter with something.Don't pound on it but give it a decent whack. If that works it's probably a bad starter. I went through this on my kid's metro a little while ago. Same symptoms. It would click but no starter.

Good Luck!

My schematic shows a black wire running from the positive terminal directly to the starter motor relay. Are you sure that wire is good?

Have you checked the fusible links in the engine compartment?

fuses under the dash are all good. its a brand new starter that i had checked at autozone and worked fine but thanks for the help. possibly a relay(often referred to as a fuse under the hood)? if so would i be able to switch say the a/c one with another? and which would keep it from starting(so i know what to look for)?

Re: 97 4cyl lsi 4dr wont start or shift from park

The fusible link Mr.Pink refers to under the hood is actually a fuse not a relay. I have an '89 and it has a 50 amp fuse. These are main circuit breakers, (fuses) that power certain parts of the electrical systems. I had a problem where as the connection to the main fuse had arced enough times that it lost its connection. It was a slide on blade type that plugged in underneath the fuse holder. I could wiggle it to make the connection but it would'nt stay. I ended up hard wiring it to the input side of the fuse. I was going to change the connector, which was a female slide connector but the connector the manufacturer uses is slightly bigger than your normal connectors. Hope this helps. Good luck.
