A Newer ST 1.6 w/less miles. The GT and GTS are wider body and the ST engine compartment will not support much more.

Actually, the engine compartments are dimmensionally the same.

You can drop in a 4A-GE, 20v J-Spec 4A-GE or a 4A-GZE without too much hassle, and gain tons of aftermarket support by installing one of Toyota's finest n/a 4 cylinders ever made.

Check out Toyosport's engine list

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't your car a FWD. A 7M-GTE engine is from a MKIII Supra, which is rear wheel drive. So no it wont work unless you do a lot of modifications. Anything can be done with a lot of money but it would be WAY cheaper just to buy a Supra. Unless you are or know a master fabricator it cannot be done. I would just do the 4A-GE or 4A-GZE or you could try and get a 3S-GTE in there but there would be a lot of wheelspin and torque steer. Anyway good luck with whatever you decide.

No because in the MR-2 it is mounted transversly like a FWD car. Look in the back of a MR-2 and you will see what I mean. It is a mid-engined car with rear wheel drive therefore it car run a setup similar to a front wheel drive car with the engine mounted transversly connected to a transaxle. Where as the 7M-GTE is mounted "front-to-back" like in every front-engine rear-drive car I can think of. If you were to try and turn the 7M-GTE 90 degrees to mount it side to side you would run into a plethora of clearance problems. You would have to widen the width between the strut towers a foot or more which would create one wierd looking car. The 3S-GTE on the other hand can be mounted in a FWD or RWD position. Not to confuse you or anything but it is small enough to be mounted side-to-side and also has the provisions for an engine mount to be put in a RWD car like my older Celica.
