1991 K1500 Dash Brake Light Flashing Code

My 1991 Chevrolet K1500 (5.8L Auto 4wd) is flashing a code on the "BRAKE" light in the dash cluster. Kinda weird how it came about, but here we go...

Had a rough running issue about 3 weeks ago and at that time the dash brake light was flashing 4 times with a solid 5th flash (beep beep beep beep beeeeeeeep). Ended up replacing the distributor because the pick-up coil was going bad. Plus we disconnected and blocked off the egr vacuum line because the scanner at the shop said it was bad and it wouldn't hold any pressue with a manual vacuum pump.

The day it left the shop the dash light was on solid. It was like that for about 3 days. I took a 200 mile trip and during the trip, the light started flashing again only this time it was a total of seven - 6 flashing and the 7th solid (beep beep beep beep beep beep beeeeeeep).

I have no idea where to start. I will also say that I had it in the shop today for a couple new tires and had them check out my 4wd for the season. They said it wouldn't engage because of a bad actuator. I have a manual shift on the floor but not manual hubs for the 4wd and I don't know if this could have something to do with the whole issue.

I hope someone could help me with this. Thanks alot for your time either way.

Re: 1991 K1500 Dash Brake Light Flashing Code

I know nothing about your flashing brake light but I know a little about the actuator.
I just talked to my neighbor who has a 92 k1500 that the front drive would not engage, today the shop told him the actuator was bad.

This is what I know. I have a 95 K2500 that did the same thing. The part is called a thermo actuator. I went to the Chev dealer to buy the part and the parts man asked if I wanted to upgrade from the thermo actuator to an electrical actuator. The actuator price was the same but I think the wire harness for the elctrical one was an additional $75. I bought the electrical one and have not had any engagement problems in years. Spend the money and get the electrical upgrade. At the time I was told that that it would only work on 1995 and newer models.
My neighbor told me today that the shop his truck was at said there was an upgrade for the 92 model. If I were you I would check to see if it is available for your model year.
whatever you decide the problem is easy to fix yourself.
