1970 Dart Imp stats

Hello there i am jeff and i am 17 years old i jsut recently got my frist car which was a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger with a slant six in it. 225 Cubic Inches. I am wondering how i can make my car very loud to let people know at school my car ant a joke i am sick of everyone calling it a Beaner Mobile. I also would like to know how i can improve my acceleration as fast as possible i would liek to go cheap but i am willing to do anything i can i am very dedicated in rebuilting my dart. It is all stock i herd a cherry bomb for loud and air shocks will help in the back to raise a little. What are your ideas understand i still want to be able to drive around town i jsut want that loud car that has the acceleration. I do "not" want to make holes in my car to make it lighter. Thanks for you reading this and your input would be awsome. My dad has been rebuildign cars along time i got a auto shop i can use that my dad freind knows, just want to make it louder first. Thanks agian!
-Jeff

Re: 1970 Dart Imp stats

Clifford Research, in California, has a good selection of parts for the straight 6. The "bolt ons" (headers, intake, covers, etc.) are excellent. Use the more conventional sources for internal engine parts. Comp Cams, Ross pistons, etc.

It's "been done", building a hot little 6, but the amount of money spent could easily be more than building a 360 for it. A V8 in that car would be more in line with your performance requirements.

I advise against air shocks. Raising the rear of the car will have a negative affect on handling and drivability (to say nothing of the "wannabe" look it brings with it). Good "gas" shocks would be better.

Re: 1970 Dart Imp stats

How about rebuilding an engine WHere can i find most of these parts and I have always wondered this. On the engine the older the engine now do they put out same performence as a new one and i would rather go cheaper but still want to get the kick performance. My father after talking to him said to rebuild an engine would be a good plan but he does not work at a mech shop anymore, so would be nice to order some of this offline. I herd around $2,000 is about what it would cost i can go to a mech shop my dad knows somone i can lift/build this engine and such. I know alot of questions but i want to do this right I am thinking 318 but i also herd 340, thanks for the input/help

Re: 1970 Dart Imp stats

One can spend anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 rebuilding an engine, or more. It all depends on what you want the engine to do, and how much you can afford. Often, the two don't match. That is, one usually wants MORE than they can afford. This requires some serioius planning and compromises. Compromise power over safety and durability. That is, don't cut the budget for safety related or durability, for horsepower. If you do, you won't enjoy it for long.

318 is a tough little engine. It offers little in performance potential, though. The cylinder heads simply can't "work" properly with the small bore. 340 or 360 is a far superior approach. For a modern build, we recommend 360. They're much easier to find, parts are a little less expensive than 340, and for a street car, 360 makes more "usable" power (low-end and mid-range torque). 340 may be a superior "race" engine, though.

Dude!

One of our many "slogans" is "We don't care WHAT color you paint it, we'll build it!"

Actually, we do a fair number of Dodges. For the small block, I really like the 360. I know it has a less-than-stellar reputation, but that's mostly due to how choked they were with emmission controls. There's one running around this "neck of the woods" with over 500 horsepower and 450 lb. ft. It's in a '71 Duster. No track time yet...
