Question Re: How to replace '03 Getrag F23 transmission

Ok then....

Well can anyone tell me if I have to take the engine out too or can I remove the tranny with the engine still in the car?

Re: How to replace '03 Getrag F23 transmission

Its straight forward really...

You can drop the trans with the motor still in the car, but a little trick is, trimming the ears off the engine sub frame on the drivers side. This is so you can maneuver the trans out the bottom quick and easily.

obviously you need to remove everything in order to pop the axles out of the trans, and this is just basic automotive know-how.

There are like 8-9 bolts holding the trans to the motor. One is a royal bitch and you need like an 18" extension and have to get at if from the passenger side of the car since its behind the thermostat housing. You'll see what I mean when you can't figure out why the trans won't seperate.

Thats really about it, honestly... you don't need a masters in automotive know-how to remove the trans. Just get everything out of the way and pull it with a cherry picker out the bottom. It will not come out the top with the motor inside the car.

I think I found what you mean "trimming the ears off the engine sub frame on the drivers side". Found at another site.

Yep, original poster on that site who figured that out was PJ. He's a good guy.
