Removing wiper/headlight switches - button replacement
I'm trying to replace my wiper control switch unit on a 91. First step is to remove the instrument cluster bezel. I removed the screws (2 upper, 2 lower), but the thing doesn't want to come out or separate from the dash. It's getting stuck around the middle of the bottom part. If I pull any harder, something is sure to break. Started removing the column cover to see if I could get a better look at what's holding it up, but it looks like the column has to be dropped down a bit for the upper cover to come out, so I stopped there.
The reason I want to replace the switch unit is because it has 3 broken buttons that have popped off. So I picked up a good used unit with intact buttons. Is there a way to remove just the buttons without breaking them? Anyone have any insight into the button problem? Causes? I assume it's a common problem because the switch units seem to be sought after items on eBay. |

Re: Removing wiper/headlight switches - button replacement
When I first got mine it was a RV tow car. Someone hung something on it or tried to stabile the steering wheel broke the lever right off. Had to replace the lever module right off the bat.
I remember the problem you are seeing. It was a while back and if Im thinking of the same car I had to drop the lower dash panel. Not hard just a couple phillips screws. After that there is a U shaped stabilizing bracket with 2 vertical bolts which holds the steering column firm. If you loosen those two bolts ( as I recall didnt have to take them out)the column will drop and you can install it easily.

Re: Removing wiper/headlight switches - button replacement
I have a '89. I replaced mine and the four screws is all it was. I just checked my old one and could'nt see anything else that holds it. I don't think you can replace the buttons without removing it. The switch screws on from the inside. Good luck.
