Oil Light stays on

I have a 97 Ford Escort LX with a 2.0 engine. My wife was on her way to work today and I got a call saying her oil light was on. It was down 2 quarts. She poured in 2 quarts of oil and the light went off. after a couple of minutes the oil light came back on. She went to the next exit and checked her oil level again and it was fine, but the light stayed on. Any help or thoughts would be great.

Thank you,

Brian

Re: Oil Light stays on

I dunno for sure about the sensors and wiring on that year, but if you are certain that the oil level is good, the only other things to consider are the filter or a possible pressure problem.Granted, she just added a couple quarts, but if it was that low it was probably overdue for some maintenance, including an oil change. DO a full oil/filter change and see what happens.

Maybe the sending unit is stuck?

Re: Oil Light stays on

It may have no oil pressure. I wouldn't drive it until I found whether or not it actually had pressure. If it has no pressure the hydraulic valves will be making a lot of noise. If you don't hear that clacking of the valves I'd say the pressure is all right and the sending unit or light was at fault.
