Re: starter

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't done the starter on a 2002 Explorer, but the factory service manual doesn't imply there's a trick.

Starter Motor — 4.6L

Removal
WARNING: When performing maintenance on the starting system be aware that the heavy gauge leads are connected directly to the battery. Make sure the protective caps are in place when maintenance is completed.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
2. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to «Section 100-02».
3. Remove the starter motor solenoid terminal cover.
4. Disconnect the starter wires.
1 Disconnect the starter solenoid wire.

2 Remove the nuts.

3 Remove the battery cable.
5. Remove the starter motor (11002).
1 Remove the bolts.

2 Remove the starter motor.

Installation
1. Install the starter.
1 Position the starter motor.

2 Install the bolts.
2. Connect the starter wiring.

1 Position the battery cable.

2 Position the starter solenoid wire.

3 Install the nuts.
3. Install the starter motor solenoid terminal cover.
