Power Window Switch or window Motor? Help
Apologies if this has been answered somewhere. But I have been reading all day and have not found a clear answer
My drivers side window just died, won't go up or down. The switch (master driver side) still operates the passenger side window without a problem, as does the passenger side switch. Question 1: Would this indicate that the master switch is still working (since it still operates passenger window) and I should probably suspect the driver side motor? If it could still be the switch could someone explain how I could test it with a voltmeter, or how to possibly send some voltage to the motor without removing the door panel, to check it. I have removed/unplugged the switch and see 4 prongs (4 in a row) on one side and 3 on the other (2,space and 1). Just don't want to pay for a switch and than find out its the motor. Thanks for any help. Oh yes its a 2000 Montana |

Re: Power Window Switch or window Motor? Help
Pop the switch out and give the connector a wiggle and a squeeze and see if you can tighten it up. Mine did this a little while ago and thats all I did to fix it.

Re: Power Window Switch or window Motor? Help
Thanks. Well I sorted it out. First I removed the switch. Than I sprayed contact cleaner under the toggle switches and rockered them back and forth. I than connected it to test it and the down window worked but not the up. So now I'm pretty sure its the switch. Price for new aftermarket at scrap yard was $85 CAD.
I figured no harm in taking it apart so I tried to pry off the rocker switches to see how the connections under them were. It was a PITA to remove them and finally I didn't care if they broke. As a previous post said they, you need to get under them at the pivot point with something like a tiny screwdriver and pry them open so the tabs release. It was difficult but I finally just forced screwdriver under each side and forced it out. Only damage was to the lower housing but nothing serious. Now on the rocker switch there are 2 small white plastic pieces that are spring loaded. They rocker on the contacts of the main switch to work the up and down contacts. I noticed the plastic round part was worn on one of them. Secondly I noticed the contact that it worked located on the main switch were very black and dirty. Be very careful as the small copper connections that are rockered can fall out (lost them a few times but managed to locate them). I suggest removing them with tweezers and cleaning and setting aside. I than cleaned the contacts under them (in the switch housing) thoroughly. I than took the small spring mounted plastic pieces on the good rocker (Passanger one) and put them int the Driver rocker and popped it back into the cleaned (replaced brass connectors first) body of the switch. Success....the driver side worked flawlessly. Finally I fashioned a small piece of plastic to repair the worn (spring loaded) plastic piece end and epoxied it on. I than placed it on the passenger side rocker and reinstalled. Now both work great and I saved $85. If the passanger plastic piece fails all I lose is control of my passanger window from the driver side. Took about 1 1/2 hours. Hope this helps anybody else. |
