Help! TKS Giving Roadtrip and Died

I have a 2002 Montana and was leaving Cinti and going to Charleston, SC to see the folks for the Thanksgiving weekend. Going up a large hill between Corbin and London KY and when the trans downshifted it felt like I lost the tranny as we had high RPM. I let of the gas and it caught and we proceeded. About 10 min later we had the same problem. Only this time the car completely died. NO POWER. Luckily got off the side but it was a mess with 2 kids and wife in the cold. I tried to restart the car but nothing. The starter sounded like it would spin but didn't sound like the engine was turning. I don't understand why the engine would just shut down in the middle of going 75 mph down the highway. I had the tow truck driver listen when I tried to start and he immediately said timing belt. Does this sound correct? Any information would be helpful as I am currently in a hotel with kids and wife and need any help???? Does this sound right? How much to fix $$$$ ?? How long??? Will I likely have additional engine damage if it was the timing belt?

If it is a high mileage van it could be the timming chain system, one of the gears.

I forgot to note that the van has 92,000 miles on it.
