1990 dodge

NEED SOME HELP--I HAVE A 4 WHEEL DRIVE DODGE--WHEN THE TRANS SHIFTS INTO 3RD I GET A GRINDING SOUND--AROUND 40MPH---IF I PUT IT IN O/D THE SOUND GOES AWAY--THE QUESTION IS --DOES THE TRANS HAVE TO BE PULLED TO FIX---ANYONE KNOW?

Sounds like something in 3rd...what does the transmission fluid look like? Does temperature change anything? What do you think about maybe a loose motor mount is letting the fan rub against the fan shroud?
