gas meter gauge problem

I have a 97 malibu with the 3100 engine; I went to replace the headgasket and i just gave up and said i was going to just replace the engine. I put everything back and now the gas gauge is under the black needle..........

What and how can that happend........

If the gas gauge worked befor you replaced the engine, check you fusses and the wires that you had to unhook..

Put a paper clip through the trip reset hole and raise the needle above the black stop. This is an issue with many Bu's when the battery gets disconnected. It helps to do it with the ignition on.

So I am suppose to push the reset black needle in and take a paper clip and put it through the reset hole. Then use the paper clip to push the gas gauge needle in and I guess the gas gauge would go back up...........

The clip should fit in between the button and the glass. You then have to lift the needle above the black stop. If the ignition is on, the needle should raise once you clear the black stop.
