95 SL1 starter spins don't engage
This morning the 95 SL1 (always reliable) acted like the battery was weak, wouldn't turn over. Jumped it and it turned over one or twice then the starter started wining like its not engaging the flywheel. If we bang on th starter with hammer it will turn over once or twice but it don't start immediately as usual. Maybe bad sensor, timing chain, The starter is a $130 guess so I don't want to go there right away. Any tips to verify the bad starter or something. We cleaned the posts and charged the battey. Thanks. Chuck in Texas

Re: 95 SL1 starter spins don't engage
You can remove the starter and have it checked at autozone. But if it attempts to start over and id say its a bad starter...especially with the whining noise

Re: 95 SL1 starter spins don't engage
removed the starter, bought the $140 w/tax replacement, replaced unit, wouldn.t start without jump. Difficult starting because of flooding. Every thing is A-OK now. The little gear ( think it's called a bendix) on the starter was flopping around loose and not returning to the home position explaining the whining starter syndrom (similar to a bad spot on the flywheel). Thanks guys. good luck .
