Virus/spyware problem

Does anyone know of a virus or malaware that makes pop ups stating "Critical System Warning!" Mainling leading to some sort of "AV Program" that I really doubt is legit, some go to something from windows, some go to others and so fourth. There is a little triangle Icon in the windows toolbar that has some bubble thing pop up every 5 seconds. downloaded Adaware after we got it, since for some reason my previous install of that is no longer on th pc, and it wont even run, gets some error message along with othe various programs like skype, piddely things like that. Also went to add remove programs in safemode, found some winantispy or simmilar name, removed it, PC restarted, now I cant get into add remove programs. Also renames home page to this site, http://renamehomepage.com/security/xp/ not sure what thats all about but we cant change homepage from it.

Any ideas? Hopefully somebody can understand this...

Re: Virus/spyware problem

You're screwed. Back up your porn and reinstall Windows.

Those symptoms are common of a lot of viruses. If you search the web long enough you'll probably find some site that will walk you thru a virus removal process. It will show you what to remove from your registry and startup files. But most likely it won't work. It's easier to reinstall Windows.

Re: Virus/spyware problem

That's why it is so important to have an anti-virus running everytime you are on the net. I use Avira Anitvir Personal. I think it's still freeware. Plus running Adaware and Spybot at least once a week keeps my machine clean.

I just don't look at porn.
I run ATF Cleaner every time I close out the internet. That does help.

Re: Virus/spyware problem

The free version of PC doctor does a pretty good job, I installed it on my mothers PC when the same trojan hit it and it worked out well. You can get the free version as part of Googles' earth pack and set it for a scheduled scan for spyware, but it does seem to pick up most trojans in real time even without upgradoing to the paid for version.

That's my complaint about most anti virus software, they are mostly all bloat ware and take over your OS and slow your PC down. I run the free version of PC Doctor to keep out Trojans in real time and run an on line scan from House Call from Micro Trend on a regular basis along with a regularly scheduled backup of my porn, like the tax returns and medical coverage disputes.

Thats the real porn I have to deal with. I must be getting old.

Re: Virus/spyware problem

Initial problem seems gone, but adaware and skype still get the termination error and wont run, ran spybot, but internet was running to slow for trend micro, so I wasnt able to run that.

Re: Virus/spyware problem

I uninstalled SpyBot after i'd got rid of my virus, it was making the computer too slow. Avast! is plenty good enough for me now. If i get another issue then i'll reinstall SpyBot, but it saps all your resources.

Re: Virus/spyware problem

I had a PC come into my shop that was totaly hijacked. All antivirus software on it was disabled and the browser was hijacked to redirect any attempt at an online scan. I finaly got Spyware Doctor loaded of a usb stick and ran a scan. 615 infections found and over 200 high risk or elevated risk but the hijacker crashed it on cleanup. How the hell do you get 615 infections, over dial-up no less, and not notice?

Found some good software to deal with it at http://www.securitywonks.net/site/index.php Under the downloads tab they have a link to the Ultimate Boot CD for windows. It's awsome, long list of antivirus, antispyware software and other utilites included and they're all freeware. Info on it here: http://projects.securitywonks.net/pr...ls.php?file=32 click on the tools list link for a full list.

Cyberdefender is the best anti-virus I've found. It blocks out the virus from corrupting your pc!
