z28 hop ups

hey,

i have a couple of camaro's i'm trying to hop up. i have an 87' iroc that i'd like to get an extra 25 to 50 hp without pulling the engine. i also have a 95' z28 with the lt1 engine. i have the engine out and the block and heads in the machine shop. i'm thinking of going with the zz4 hotcam kit but i have heard good and bad things about this. i was looking for someone who might have been down this road before and could help me out. i'm lookin for about 350 hp for the lt1.

25 HP without pulling the engine can be done easily, 50 not so easy.
Start with exhaust, headers and cat back. That alone should net you about 15-25 HP. After that it depends on the engine you have. If it is the 350, a 52mm throttlebody along with porting and gasket matching the plenum & runners might get you 8-10 HP. A good tune up will get you the best seat-of-the-pants difference..new plugs, wires (solid core spiral wound) a good cap with brass terminals and a rotor to match and maybe even a higher voltage coil. Next would be the O2 sensor. All of that could get you 25 HP back that you lost from those items being worn out.
If it is a 305, skip the 52 mm TB, not needed on the 305. All the rest still applies to the 305 but may net you a few ponies less.

Re: z28 hop ups

For the LT1, edlebrock makes an intake for these that is supposed to add 23 hp over stock. Pair that with some of their LT1 heads and a bigger throttle body. They probably make a cam kit for that engine too. Add some headers and that should make 350 hp with the right pistons. My 94 Z28 is stock under the hood but I put in 4.10 gears and for the money was a good upgrade.
