2001 Grand Prix warm re-start trouble?

My '01 Grand Prix seems to have a problem with warm re-starts. If I try to re-start within 15 minutes of shutting it off, no problems at all. Anything longer than that but shorter than ~ 4-5 hrs is where the problem is. The engine usually cranks up pretty quickly, but then the RPM's dip way down....more often than not far enough for the engine to stop. The 2nd attempt is usually successful right away. If i give it a little gas once cranked (on 1st attempt), the RPM's stay up (as expected) and no problems. I realize i could just do that every time, but that'd be masking some underlying problem. If the car sits for 5 hrs or longer (even for days) then there is no problem starting.

Any ideas??

Thanks.

Welcome to AF.

Try unplugging the MAF sensor. If the problem goes away, you need a new one. Usually MAF's trip a code, but your symptoms are indicative of a MAF starting to go bad but not to the point of causing the CEL to light.
