Power steering issue. What could this be?
On my way home from work my power steering gave out. It happened just as I pulled into my driveway. I heard this subtle bellowing sound coming from the power steering system. I got out and found that my power steering fluid had completely leaked all over my drive way and I have 0 fluid left for the pump.
Not only is it hard to steer, but the noise has me concerned. I'm not able to find the leak, and I'm not sure if it's a hose or the pump itself, but I'm a complete newb so I don't even know what to look for. Is it possible to diagnose with this information? The car is still driveable (I took it up and down the street once to duplicate the noise) but I really don't want to spend the dough to have it towed to the shop if I can safely drive it there (about 2 miles). How much is this sucker going to cost to replace? Anyone? |

Re: Power steering issue. What could this be?
just fill it back up with fluid, start the car and see if you can see the fluid coming out. i wouldnt recommend driving it real far w/o power steering fluid cuz you will burn the pump out...and pumps arnt real cheap.

Re: Power steering issue. What could this be?
As suggested refill it. I find it hard to believe you can't find the leak since it dumped out all over your driveway.
Carefully inspect the pressure and return lines to the rack and pinion from the power steering pump and inspect the rack and pinion steering gear.

Re: Power steering issue. What could this be?
Man, mine did that, and it actually ended up being a seal in the rack and pinion itself blew. Fluid was coming out of the rubber boot on the end of the R&P....

Re: Power steering issue. What could this be?
If you don't drive too far before fixing it things will be fine....as in don't drive it any more other than testing as above to find the leak.
Should you fix it promptly the growling noise will go away once refilled to the proper level. If not, you'll have the noise permanently. Just be careful if you buy any "aftermarket" PS return lines. I had a guy at an auto parts store hand me a piece of EPDM heater hose once. This did not make me happy.
