1990 5.7L Silverado Engine starting problem

truck has been running great till yesterday, tried to start repeatedly and it would crank but not fire, shot starting fluid under the air filter and got fire, drove to the stop sign about 100 ft away, it died, but restarted immediately.

fuel pump was recently rebuilt, but no one changed the fuel filter - we are going to do that tonite (cheapest/quickest attempt at a fix)

does anyone have any other ideas?

i don't know if this has anything to do with it (i suggested it to my husband, but he said no) coupla days ago, he went to turn on the headlights and smoke came outta the switch - hasn't happened again. any chance wires have melted together? also we recently changed the key ignition??

Re: 1990 5.7L Silverado Engine starting problem

Could be a loose connection in the ignition switch, which might be part of the reason for stalling. As for the headlight switch, they can and do go poof but not likely the reason for your stalling.

When you do get it going...if it feels sluggish or idles rough, it could also be the fuel pressure regulator, a clogged IAC valve or stuck EGR valve. The regulator's my first guess though.

I've also heard of problems with loose ground connections and low voltage going to the fuel pump. If this wasn't checked, it can obviously cause poor pump operation. Hope this helps!
