WELL...my gf's malibu has developed quite a screeching sound...its coming from the one of the accessories or the belt itself...i'm just now going to try and reverse it as mentioned in the thread below this one...but...i've replaced both idler bearings...the belt tensioner looks aftermarket...i've done the listen through the stick trick and all the bearings sound decent....im stumped guys but the HARMONIC BALANCER is what catches my attention because it wobbles..like...looks really wobbly...i tried to tighten it but i just turned the whole assembly...help!

Spray the belt with belt dressing. If it stops screeching then replace the belt.

Re: 98 Malibu 3.1...Difficulty finding source of noise
Look closely at the harmonic balancer if it looks likes its moving the rubber could be broken. You will need to pull it and buy a new or used one from a scrap yard.
http://www.autopart.com/tools/toolsmain/tool/T_2236.htm This is a picture of a puller. I had to use shorter bolts on my puller but I had some used bolts. I had to pull the front wheel and remove the motor mount. I had to remove some plastic trim. I used an engine hoist and dropped the motor so I had room for the puller. AC lines run in front of the pulley which is the reason I dropped the engine. I just installed a new crank seal. |
