Tips on Gen 3 IAC cleaning
My buddy and I just both have Gen 3's so we cleaned our IACs at the same time. Both cars idle normally after getting the black carbon gook out.
Here's the tips...
1) No need to drain the coolant. (factory shop manual lists this as a step)
2) Once you have the TB out and you're able to see the 4 phillips screws that hold on the IAC you're likely to find that they're pretty rusted and don't want to move. Use vice-grips to get them started before using a screw driver (to avoid stripping the middle of the screw head).
3) The factory shop manual shows how to test the IAC with a battery. It includes drawings that are supposed to show what the valve should look like open and closed but the drawings aren't very good and you can't really tell what closed should look like. When we tested for closed the valve went from "half closed" to "about 3/4 closed". Since both behaved the same way and were in-spec for resistance we decided that must be correct.
