Gas pedal hard to push

I've got a '93 Lesabre and the gas pedal has always been on the harder side to push. It seems to get harder to push the harder I push it. It starts to get real hard about half throttle then just gets harder from there. It sure cramps my driveing style Any Ideas of what could cause this and how to soften the pedal? Our last '91 Lesabre's pedal was soft as a feather all the way to the floor. It just makes it hard to pass cars or be quick about doing things.

I would check for added springs.

go to the motor. Take off the plastic cover by removing the oil filler tube by twisting hard on it.

Move the wheel at the throttle body that the cable from the accelerator pedal moves. When you do that, you eliminate the tube through which the cable moves and friction it can make or the floor mat under the pedal or the pivot point inside the car needing oil.

If it's hard to move at the throttle body, you may have the inside of the throttle body caked up with carbon blow back that comes when the car is shut off. It coats the inside of the intake manifold.

Some mechanics clean the throttle body at 70K miles or so because of this buildup. It usually causes sticking at tip off.

Re: Gas pedal hard to push

Thanks imidazol97! I will give that a try tomorrow or so. I knew there had to be some reason it was hard to push. If cleaning it fixes the hardness I will be very happy!

You should post what the problem was in case another member comes here with the same problem and can see your post as a possible solution. That is one of the purposes of these forums, to post our problems and hopefully solutions so that others who experience the same thing can use that info.
We've all had those "embarrassing moments" but we all learn from them, and others can too.

Sounds like he was just leeching information, and doesnt want to contribute anything back after someone gave him suggestions to try.

I wouldn't say that. A quick check of their posting history says that the one on the 14th in this thread was their latest post. There is no further activity, so it might mean they haven't been back to the site. Many times, people come here and ask a question and never post again, as they probably have posed the same question on other sites, and the minute they get an answer from any of the sites, they stop looking.

Re: Gas pedal hard to push

Didn't he say he was too embarrassed to post the solution? It would be interesting to know. It is OK to have some fun as long as it is in good taste or not too demeaning or a personal attack.

Now having said that I'll second Bo's (HotZ28) comment. The floor mat.

It would be an interesting thread if we were to post some "embarrassing" finds or solutions to our problems with our vehicles. That could lessen the effect of just one member afraid to post their solution for fear of it being to embarrassing. They could easily see that they aren't the only ones.
I remember a few years back I had a somewhat similar issue with the gas pedal "sticking". At first glance it didn't appear to be anything inside the passenger compartment, so I checked the engine compartment and thta checked out okay. Upon closer inspection of the pedal and pulling the carpet back a bit I discovered a small McDonalds Happy Meal toy from one of my kids had lodged behind the pedal and would move on occasion making it seem to stick when it was in a certain location.

Re: Gas pedal hard to push

OK guys, you win It was a block of chees Just kidding, it was in fact the floor mat . I guess when I checked at night I didn't see it but then I checked in the daylight and sure enough, there she was...

As far as not posting the solution and not sharing with everyone else who might have the problem, I just didn't get a chance to do it as my computer contracted a virus. Luckely I cought it early and didn't have to do anything drastic. I'm actually a moderator at the unofficial eMachines forums (HERE) so I know about people just asking a question then abandoning the topic completely. I hate when they do that. So if any of you have an eMachines and have any trouble with it, I'll be glad to help!
