I took my car in for an alignment yesterday and the shop contacted me 6 hours later to tell they could not do the alignment because the tie bars (right inner and left) were worn so bad the car would not keep alignment and they could fix the problem for about $400. Well being as I was not completely sure which part had gone bad I went and picked my car up as is. Anyhow has anyone ever had this problem and is it fixable without taking it to a shop?

I think the tie rods are the part on the steering rack that connects to the knuckles. $400 its A LOT of money to replace those. From what I've seen they are held on but a cotter pin and bolt, and the other part screws on. I don't see why it would cost so much.

Thanks for the info, I am going to keep researching this. Maybe the price was right. Thanks for the starting point.

i just replaced my tie rod ends last weekend. i'm not sure if that is what they are talking about, but they cost me $30 from the local auto store and then i did it myself. not hard at all. they might be talking about something else though.

The rack is a seperate part. The tie rod ends are what they are talking about and ya thats a normal cost for them to replace them. (NAPA parts probly) Thats what the alinment place told me also. Call around you'll get the same price about 50 + or - a few dollars. But you can get them down at Like autozone kargens...... $30-45 each side
