dex cool

I just heard about a problem with dexcool. My 99 Silverado has 95,000 miles on it and still has dexcool in it. The manual says its good for alot longer. Has Chevorlet changed their status on the longevity of it or is it still good for the longer miles.

Re: dex cool

GM still is saying it's good for 5 yr/150,000, but that is under "ideal conditions". I have DexCool in many of my vehicles and I change it out every 3 years or so or about every 40 to 50,000 miles.I also do a thorough flush. Too many times some vehicle owners don't pay enough attention to their cooling systems that have DexCool in them because of the long maintenance timeframe. That is a mistake. Sometimes air can get into the system and cause issues as well as accidentally mixing other coolants with the DexCool. Best thing to do is to follow a shorter period of time for flushing and refilling your cooling system, and maintain the proper level of coolant and it should be fine.

Re: dex cool

A guy here at work has been having problems with his 2000 s-10 not heating. After he had the heater core replaced And it still did not correct the problem. He found out about the dexcool problems. I live in NC and I don't consider it it harsh conditions. Thanks for the reply.

Re: dex cool

Flush it. WELL. With garden hose force. Every hole you can open, hit it with the hose till water comes out somewhere else yup.

I've had 4 dex vehicles, all had 'the dex plug'. Including my new '02 1-ton, maintained immaculately, ALWAYS running, 195k 28 months, GOT THE PLUG.

Flush it. Yesterday uh huh.

when you live in a cold climate vehicle owners must have the corrrect mixtures of dexcool and water...owners in warm areas think they can reduce or even eliminate dexcool from the coolant system...this is a big mistake as these systems must have the proper ratio of dexcool to clean distilled water to keep the system from corrosion ...In my area problems occur when lube jockies mix silicone coolant with dexcool...then its a big mess...

I agree 3-4years is the correct interval for replacing...it usually ends up being alot cheaper and your vehicle is more reliable especially when you need heat in a 10deg f day..
