Blown Fuseable Links...
I completely lost power in my car yesterday while driving, come to find out my fuseable links have melted in my 1982 caprice. I want to replace all of the wires, I've sent it to my mechanic. Is this usually a timely manner or pretty much a quick fix? I feel so naked without my car!!

Re: Blown Fuseable Links...
I don't know how many fuseable links burnt just one normally you can get by only replacing the link. All of them I would suspect another problem. A new wiring harness will cost more than the vehicle is worth unless restored. They would be very hard to find. They can be replaced with two wire size smaller wire than the feed wire. Were they rubbing do you know what caused the problem.

Re: Blown Fuseable Links...
I found out the problem, mechanic fixed it in less than an hr...one link burned the other one up...and so everytime I lose power in my car now I just have to replace a 30v fuse under the hood...

Re: Blown Fuseable Links...
then the problem is not over if you are told to replace a fuse if it happens again then go somewere else. if you burned up more than one than you got a serious problem.

Quote:
with a vehicle this old the loom that covers the wires turns to dust,,,you must trace the burnt wire back and recover with new loom and if necessary tape over or replace damaged wire...use the color of the wire and loook at every point where the wires are chaffing... remember most automechanics are not electrically up on things like this...also this takes time and care...this can cost hundreds of dollars to replace all the car wiring if you shot gun the repair...most likely you may only need a $3.oo role of electrical tape... unless you find the short the worst that can happen is the old hunk of iron will go up in flammes...1982 no big loss... |
