99 burb wont start

Long post...get popcorn.
Ill never claim to be a mech-an-ik. ?... Anyway,
I get in our 99 suburban, 350 vortec, 2wd on Thurs and get about a mile from the house and it just dies. KAPUT! Wouldnt start. Troubleshot down to no spark, threw a coil at it and it started right up. Drove 310 miles to LA and back and around some this weekend. Wife calls at 9am this morn and she said it just died while driving. I go out and jump it and it starts right up. I drive it back to the base and get nearly home and its just stutters and dies. I get out my code reader it says bad Crank Position Sensor. Ok, $70 I dont have for a new sensor and I turn it over a few times and it starts. Driving it the rest of the way home, it stutters and dies but makes it home. I go back to work. Return and try to start and now it wont even turnover. I have put the Camaro battery on it thinking it was a bad battery. Now it just clicks. I have cleaned the leads on the batt and it did seem like it was hard to turn over like the starter was going bad. Ok, Ill get a starter, but why is it stuttering? It has a new coil and a new Crank position sensor. What else would make it stutter? Can the starter draw enough amps to keep it from starting? It has no codes. No check engine light. Fuel sprayed everywhere. I think fuel psi is good.

First thing is to check the electrical system.
Low voltage will cause all kinds of problems.
Some parts places will give you a free check up.
Have battery and alternator and starter tested and make sure it is holding the proper battery voltage.
After the starter and charging system is up to par.
Clear codes and see how it is running.
Hoe many miles on tune up?
Post back how it goes.

Thanks, I have a good battery and now it wont crank over at all. The battery is out of the Camaro, a race car battery, and it still wont start. Doing same thing it did before I swapped batteries.
It wont even crank now, and I know that once I do get it cranking it wont start cause of no fire from coil.
what gives?

Check battery cabels and ends and battery voltage all of the way to starter.
Can you jump the starter solenoid and get it to crank?

with all the cranking you may have cooked the starter...you won't be the first to do this...

crank for 10 sec,max... then wait 2 minutes...if you don't ,,just keep buying starter motors . as even a new one will fail in a short time...


the CPS is probably bad ,,new one...or the connector/wiring.so check this all out after you replace the starter...


If you have NO CPS the computer can't send a control signal to coil,, because it does not know what the engine firing position is at..

Could be a bad ground. Could be a fault in the starter soleniod. Here's what I'd do. 1st, check to make sure positive battery cable is firmly attached to starter post and that the cable is in good shape. Next, follow the negative battery cable to where it attaches to the engine. Take it off, clean it up very well and make sure it's touching fresh, clean bare metal on the engine block. Finally, make sure that the battery cables are cleaned up really well where they attach the the battery itself.

Ok, also just to go the extra mile, check ground strap from engine block to chassis (on mine it's located on rear of engine and goes to firewall). If you don't have one, install one. It's an important ground strap.

Try these easy suggestions out, see if it makes any difference.
