Thumbs up About 98/99 Maxima ! ! !

Without question, the 98 or 99 Nissan Maxima SE is the fastest sedan (yes…that means “4-door”) recently, if not ever made FOR THE PRICE (…and I mean ORIGINAL MSRP). I know, the 97 model is practically the same as some may claim, but, surprisingly, it is a little different here and there (go ahead and read about it – specs, etc.) so let me break it to you if you have one – technically, it is a little slower than the 98 or 99 model. Getting to the point…I own a 99 Maxima SE 5-spd (ALL STOCK). Tested it out a few times and obtained an average of 6.5 sec 0-60 acceleration. This is a very accurate measurement on my behalf as other sources elsewhere give the 98 and 99 Maxima SE (5-spd) anywhere between 6.5 and 6.7 (Edmunds.com gives 6.6 for instance). Notice that I emphasize “5-spd” everywhere because stock automatic models are obviously slower and go into the 7 second range. I also think it MAY have the fastest quarter mile time (which to some is more important than 0-60 time) as well, but I have not tested that out yet so I cannot say for sure. However, as I mentioned earlier, no recent or past STOCK sedan with a retail price of $22,019 or UNDER (that was the official retail price of a base 99 Nissan Maxima SE 5-spd) beats a time of 6.5. Prove me wrong! But be legitimate!

The 95/96 Maxima 5-speeds are the fastest 4th-gens. They have less emmisions and less restrictions. I believe the 96 is the faster of the two. The got slower by a tick after that until 2002.

well, it's 2003 now, so take into acount inflation, and the bace price of the WRX would be prolly within $1000 of that, and a WRX will woop on a Max

i think pick's more right but i'm not impartial. you took your numbers and compared them to a car-mag , i never trust magazine numbers. gotta think some magazines say around 7 seconds or more for a 4th gen 0-60 but i got it a good deal lower than that stock and even lower now that i got some mods. but my car run a 0-60 in 6.2 and can still get 28 mpg. that's impressive.

To make this fair you picked a turbocharged car to compare to the Max, now all things being equal go ahead and turbo the Max, now the Max will whupp on the WRX.

Even stock it depends on the type of race you're talking about, from the standstill it's the WRX all the way because of its' AWD, but take the advantage of the AWD and start from a roll at about 30 mph and up and then I'd say the Max would own the WRX.

I've seen the WRX and in comparison the Max is bigger, more luxuriously appointed and the reliability of the WRX is still in question whereas a Max has a solid reputation over its' lifespan besides that these 2 cars aren't even in the same class but I'm certain that you knew all of this.

Angry to the moron above...

Do you even know WHAT the msrp of the base wrx sedan is? I don't think you do. I don't know where you get your sources from (...which are BS), but wrx sedan base is $24,820 - and that's with no add-ons...completely nothing. There you have it, compared to $22,019 for base 99 maxima se 5-spd, almost 3 grand more, not 1 grand. So, you have yet to prove me wrong. Next time, try a little harder.

I disagree with you. The 95 Max was more refined, faster, cheaper, and used the original Maxima formula. As I mentioned above, They just got slower after the '96 until 2002.

They did get slower in some respects but then again if you're only talking 0-60, if you're talking 1/4 mile times the 2k and above are faster but then again they're all Maximas so a comparo of a Max to a Max is a moot point because either gen you pick you are going to get a nice car.

Everything shouldn't always have to be about speed when you got a nice refined car.

I was kinda referring to the 4th-gens. I didn't mean to start a 4th gen vs. 5th gen argument.

everyone's gonna have their opinions but i know the "fastest" max's cerainly aren't the 190 hp obd-2 maxima's 98/99. i can understand the argument of the 222 hp 5th gen being faster(i'm not saying i agree, but i understand the argument), but i don't see how he can say an emission restricted obd-2 98/99 is faster than an obd-1 95 that isn't.
