94 tbird odometer

Can anyone tell me if you can adjust the odometer mileage on a replacement speedometer? My daughters odometer just quit working and I want to replace it, but I would like it to read correctly. Can I do it from a junkyard replacement or can a dealer do it?
Thanks

You should just call the dealer to see if it can be done.

Re: 94 tbird odometer

called the dealer, and they sub out speedo work to a local business. I called them and they want $115 to adjust it to correct reading. Could it be the speed sensor if the speedometer works fine and the odometer wont turn?

Re: 94 tbird odometer

If the speedometer gives an accurate reading then the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission is working correctly. If it was mine I'd write down the mileage on the old one and the replacement so when you sell the car you can add the miles from the replacement to the original's mileage and put that on the title. You will have to do this when you go for a sticker, also. Hopefully you can find one in the junkyard with fewer miles on it. That way when you go in for a sticker and tell the mechanic the actual miles, he won't think you are lying (who would lie and say the car has more miles on it then the odometer shows!). Also in some states the mileage is tracked on computers so if you try to get a sticker and the mileage is lower then at the last inspection it will be flagged!

It is against the law for you to do this yourself. The dealer isn't allowed to do this as this would be a big money maker.
http://www.speedometerservice.com/ or any company approved can do this for you. If you get caught tampering with this their is jail time. A lot of used car dealers found out the hard way.
You can take the instrument panel in yourself or UPS it in for service. This will save you some money. You have to fill out paper work and they put a sticker on it stating what repairs were done.

Re: 94 tbird odometer

From what I understand these things break from resetting the tripometer all the time (which I do). The odometer started working again the other day and I told my daughter not to reset the tripometer anymore! Hopefully it just keeps on rolling, I really dont want to invest any more money into this thing unless I have no choice
