Climate control unit removal

Just new here, but have been reading for a few weeks. Thanks for the info on repairing the rear window regulators, it worked great. Anyway, I recently bought a 1991 Roadmaster wagon, one of the lights is out in the climate control unit. How do I get it out, and can the light be replaced? Thanks.

Re: Climate control unit removal

If you are referring to one of the 4 lights (Low washer, low fuel, etc) on the climate control unit in a car with the Automatic Air Conditioning option, C68 (look at the tag inside the tailgate door for C68), perhaps you don't need to remove the unit. If you can get at the back of the unit, there are is a light base that twists out (counterclockwise as you look at the back of it). It is a bit hard to twist, but 1/8 turn and it is out. In fact, it could be pretty frustrating to get out if the space is tight.
If you need to take the control unit out, you will need to remove the dash faceplate. I don't recall exactly everything that needs to come out, but if I remember some of it, you remove a filler panel or two below the steering column, the glovebox door assembly, then the dash face plate. There are screws to remove, then clips that hook into the dash (pull straight towards seat). You may or may not need to drop the steering column down. If dropping steering column, remove the heavy u-shape bracket first to ease access to steering column nuts, as I finally discovered after buying mid-length sockets and doing this a dozen times the hard way. Don't remove the nuts all the way, just enough to give you some working room. Then 4 screws fasten the control unit after dash face plate is off.
