please help, car trouble

I just got a used 97 grand prix and when I was in the trunk I took out the rug so i could shake it out and get the dirt and stuff off. When I took it out I noticed the underside was a little wet. I took the piece off that covers the spare tire and it was all wet. The water was orange and the piece that covers the spare tire (the rug) was falling apart. please help i dont know why it is flooded in there but its bad its all rusted. its not coming from above either. also before I saw any of this or even bought it, the mechanic said it was a little bit wet in the engine manifold. how much would that cost to fix, and could i do it myself with instruction? also does that have any relation to the spare tire compartment being flooded.

It sounds like a problem with the trunk seal.

Welcome to AF!!

The problem with the trunk is either the seal or there is a leak around the rear window that is allowing water to get into the trunk. To check this lay in the trunk with a flash light and have someone spray it with water. You should be able to find where it is coming from.

As for the engine leak, you can repair this with instructions. It usually only takes basic hand tools to repair if you are mechanically inclined. You will need a repair manual, Chiltons is probably best illustrated. If you are not mechanically inclined it will cost in the $600 to $800 range to repair.
