Question about TCC

What happens when the TCC is acting up, will the trans feel like it is slipping, will it not shift like it suppose to. Will your freeway rpm's feel a little high?

If it's the TCC itself that's failing, you probably will get slippage, most noticeably just as shifting occurs. On an '88, it is NOT electronically controlled, so you might well have a failing convertor.

Accelerate SLOWLY, and see if you notice very light swings in RPM's, just as it goes into the next gear...

Re: Question about TCC

The convertor clutch in '88 is electroniclly controlled, its the only part of the transmission that is controled by the ECM. Your dealing with a 700R4, the only difference is whether you have the 4.3 or the 2.8, either case, the 700R4 was used. Usually, a way to tell whether your convertor is locking up is to accelerate to certain, constant, speed, around 50MPH is a good speed, and to lightly push the brake pedal down, just alittle. If you converotor clutch is working, you should notice right away the RPM's jump up. If they don't then it not locking up. Don't assume you convertor is not working though. You have to make sure you have no service Engine Codes popping up. If you have a TPS, VSS, or wirng problem, the ECM will not engage the convertor. This system does not have transmission fault codes, so if its slipping, or not engaging, no transmission codes come up.

Hope this gives you an idea.

Re: Question about TCC

Thanks for the info, I have had a TCC code before, but only once and I am not sure if another problem may have thrown it, but I will do the test with the brake pedal, thanks

Re: Question about TCC

sorry, not TCC code, but a VSS code, I believe that will keep the TCC from engaging, I tried the test, at 50 mph I tap the brakes and there was no rpm jump on the tach, and it didnt sound like it increased in engine spped either, I know it doesnt increase much but it should be noticable.
