trunk question

As some of you may know my car has had a bad trunk leak for a while. When my grandma/grandpa owned my car they must have taken out the trunk liner or soemthing because when i got it the trunk was just bare empty, but thats long gone now i think. Is it like a rubber mat thats suppose to go in there? Where could i get this or is it even possible anymore? Right now i'm using a carpet to damper the road noise but i'd like to get an original or close to original mat.

take a look in the wrecking yards for the pontiac / olds/chev car 77 to 90 for a carpet.

these vehicles came with the standard rug rubber/vinyl backed...

because the trunk leaked your granpa removed the rug ...a very good idea...as I have had to repair trunks that had leaks and this rug was left to hold the water...

a rubber mat works best ..this will keep things from sliding around...

also when you put bodies in there its easy to clean up...

Haha thanks. You know i think i'm gunna have to tear apart my whole interior now. The leak must have seeped into the cab area because when i was routing speaker wires i looked at that gray insulation and guess what, it was wet! For who knows how long that rug has been holding in moisture which probably means rust. Ugh, i got a lot of work ahead of me now...better now than never i guess.

The interior rug [if its the rear window leak] will get wet...this may not be revealed until the rug is removed....as the backing will stop the rug from getting wet on top...

with the rear seat removed and the rear rug check for rusted out metal...if found I have used gal. sheet metal with fiberglass... this makes a great solid patch...the brush on westly undercoating..this product is superior to those spray cans...


on the rear window use horse hair fiberglass ..this will fill the cleaned up rust holes quickly then grind to shape...

as you can see I have done these patching jobs over the years...It goes with the rust belt and also when you keep your vehicle over 10years...

Thanks for the advice. Yeah i did use fiberglass to patch the trunk but it came out bad cause it rained that night and i didnt cover it up . I just redid it the right way and welded in a patch. I don't think the floor is actually rusting though. I'm pretty sure these cars were sprayed with rust protection in certain areas right?

I've been trying to look for the original molded carpet that covers the wells on the side and the trunk hinges, i have carpet in there now though but not the original

If you find any rust inhibiting compounds these where most likely done by an aftermarket service provider...

back in the 80's rusty jones did a very good job....problem is much of the GM sealing compounds fail at 10years,,, then the black asphalt coating falls off...then the salt chemicals start eating away at the seams....

reapplication and a though cleaning and seam sealing with a high quality non silicone sealer works best...as these have extremely high adhesion and flex....then after a week of curing coat the surface with the westly undercoating compound to seal the exposed metal ...
