1993 Olds Bravada Will Not Downshift When It's Cold Out
Hello,
I'm not a transmission man my any stretch of the imagination. Last year when it was cold out (single digits) the transmission would, at times, fail to downshift when I stopped. This was rare though. Recently, as in the past couple days, it's been doing this more frequently, maybe 50% of the time. The temp has been around 60*. The only fix I've found is to manually downshift. This usually works, probably 90% of the time. It's been serviced regularly and has no burnt smell or off color to the tranny fluid. As far as I can tell, this transmission is not computer controlled. There is no pump noise and it upshifts fine. A typical session will go like this: It's cold out. I start the truck and it drives fine. After about a mile, it will stop downshifting. I turn it off for a few minutes, and it will start downshifting again (sometimes). What do I need to look at first? Ideas? Thanks, Josh

Re: 1993 Olds Bravada Will Not Downshift When It's Cold Out
Update: It seems to be first gear that's missing. I seem to have second, third and OD. This makes no sense to me as I *thought* that, on a 4L60E, one solenoid ran first and third. It would seem third shouldn't work either...

Re: 1993 Olds Bravada Will Not Downshift When It's Cold Out
Hi Josh,
Shifting manually is supposed to overide the solenoids. I believe the 4L60E would have the 20 wire pigtail connector on the passenger side of the trans. |

Thanks Chris. Manually shifting isn't getting it either.
More info: I have first gear until the trans warms up. That's when I lose it. I have OD most of the time, but lose that sometimes too. I'll check for the pigtails. Any idea what may be happening? Thanks again, Josh <><

Re: 1993 Olds Bravada Will Not Downshift When It's Cold Out
Just did some looking in the '97 manual since it has a 4L60E trans and there was the usual pump & pressure solenoid info which applies since the trouble occurs after the fluid warms and thins out a bit.
My '97 had a no pulling in 1st gear issue that worked out ok after wiggling the 20 pin connector and checking the other wires routed over the trans....basically I was checking the wire insulation in case it was nicked on casting flash of the trans case. Finding none, I reset the DTC with my scan tool and everything was ok so I gotta think there was an issue with the connector. I'm not gonna ask about a check engine light since even the dealer techs couldn't get a handle on Olds OBD1/OBD2 combined wreck. |
