1987 pickup possible engine change

Hello,
I posted earlier about the coolant in the engine problem that I have. Long story short, I think I may have found an answer. I have the possibility of purchasing another engine for the truck. I have not seen it yet, but it is from a wrecked truck, has 232,000 on it, but supposedly well taken care of. The engine is complete, with the exception of the carburater, the distributor, it will need a water pump and the fan. I have all of those other parts, exept for the water pump which I will purchase. He wants $200 for the engine. I think that is a fair deal if I can hear it run first.

My other option is I found someone on Craigslist that is selling new engine rebuild kits. These include everything for the short block, nothing for the head, for $279. This seems rather cheap to me, so I called my local autoparts store, they want about $700 for the rebuild kit, including the valves, etc.,.. here is a link to the craiglist site that I found.

It does seem lefit and all, but still, really cheap.

I am looking for an opinion on this. I am not sure if I want to keep the truck or try to sell it after I get it running and driveable again.

Any opinions would really help .

Thanks!

Re: 1987 pickup possible engine change

I'd be hesitant buying an engine w/232K on it, even a 22R, that's still a lot of wear.
But maybe if I could hear it run and all, maybe $100, to use while I was rebuilding the other engine.

As for parts to overhaul your engine, check out engnbldr.com. Ted's prices and service are excellent.
