97 GMC k1500 4x4 Problems!!! Help!

Just bought this truck 2 weeks ago, and out of nowhere while driving in 2h heard a loud grinding noise. Now it always makes this noise in 2h. It sounds like its not disengaging from 4h, but it was never in 4h for the problem to happen. Have taken it to a few local shops, and they all agree thats what it sounds like, and also have said i need to replace the cv shafts cuz one has a ripped boot, and the Ujoints are pretty bad too. But my main questoin is, what would cause this to suddenly happen, how do i fix it??? ive read alot on the internet, and keep reading about actuators, transfer cases, and vaccuum, but dont know what to start with as im not trying to spend a ton of money....

Thanx... appreciate the help, but i honestly think my problem is pertaining more to the front with all the 4 wheel drive BS. The truck has a total of 9" of lift on 37's if that makes anyone's answer any different. The transmission seems to shift and drive fine... you can feel the grinding in the floor shifter for the 4x4.

The larger tires will put a lot more strain on the snap ring and when it breaks, the output shaft of the transfer case hits the planetary gears. You will feel this in the 4x4 floor shifter.

i think im gonna try the Ujoints in the front shaft. i messed with it yesterday and its really loose/sloppy. hopefully that takes care of the problem, cuz i was told the knocking noise i hear isnt my cv shafts if its a constant noise while im driving.

pulling the Ujoints and front drive shaft all together eliminated the knocking noise, and pretty much pinpointed where the grinding noise is coming from, which would be the transfer case, so i guess thats next on the list to yank out unless anyone else has any other suggestions

Study up on it before you pull it. You might find a fix that doesn't warrant pulling it. Small chance, but ya' don't know. Knowledge is $$$.
