I built this kit around four months ago and all was well for a couple of months then it all went pear shaped. As you can see the finish started to develop very fine cracks which can only be seen at certain angles. As far as I can tell I let all coats dry thoroghly before proceeding. The base coat is tamiya silver overcoated with tamiya clear yellow on then a couple of coats of clear auto motive laquer. A far as I can tell all paints should be compatable as they are all acrylic based. I have had odd things happen when you try and mix enamel and acrylic but none when you use the same type of paint. I think the only way to recover this may be to strip it back and start again as im not sure further coats of paint or clear will fix it. Any ideas

Did you use Tamiya bottle X-24 Clear Yellow and put Tamiya TS13 Clear spray over it?

from what i have heard (not from experience) mixing different brands of paint/clear coat/laquer can cause problems sometimes.
has the model been left anywhere where it gets very hot, then very cold? |

Re: Delayed paint problems
Quote:
The lacquer clear reacted with the oil based paint and cracked the paint because of the thinner in the gloss coat. Your going to have to strip and repaint... sorry dude Scott

The automotive laquers are 'hotter' than the Tamiya ones and will react. Did u lay down the auto laquer in fine mist coats first or just go straight ahead with the wet coat?

I was under the impression that tamiya paint from jars was all acrylic, is this not true? or are the clear colours different. I have learnt my lessons previously with mixing oil and acrylic mediums but thought I would be ok with this. Would tamiyas own clear be ok as I am planning to use the clear over silver approach again
Any further comments appreciated.ps I usually do several thin coats then a final heavier coat so as far as I can remember I did this kit this way also |

the problem is, the JARS are water-based acrylics, the Spray cans are Synthetic Lacquer based acrylic i believe..
