Noise from 01's AC

Hi,

When I start the AC in the car I am getting sound like 'ssssssssss' intermittently. The sound is like a gas leakage. My mechanic told me that tearing the AC will cost me a lot. The sound is really loud. I guess I have started getting it since I had got the AC belt changed. Does anyone know what can be the problem?

I have been getting a similar noise in my 98 for the 7 years I have owned it.
It happens when I first turn on the a/c for the day. I read somewhere that this is a normal condition. I haven't had any a/c problems with 175k on the odometer. I had the belt changed once and it made no difference. If the a/c is cold and the compressor isn't noisy I would leave it alone.
