Shifter button sticking.

Hey all. A couple of weeks ago the button on the shifter started to stick. It would not go in to get the shifter out of park. I continued to mess with it until I got it to go in. But.....I have to push the shifter to the front and lift up on it to get the button to go in. Does anyone have any info what is causing this? And what needs to be done to fix it? Thanks for any help.

ps. When I do get it in reverse or drive, it does fine. I am wondering if a cable is loose or something as such. Thanks.
