Grand am 12v outlet blows fuse

My 2000 grand am keeps blowing the fuse that runs the 12v cigarette lighter. what could be causing this? Thanks

Sounds like you have a short to ground. Does it blow immediately when you replace the fuse.

Look in the lighter socket before you tear anything apart. It's possible a dime or nickel fell in the socket, this shorts it quite efficently.

My kids done this a few times.

Also if you have an aftermarket stereo installed wrong it could be the culprit.
