code reads : EGR flow insufficient ?

I recently had my service engine light come on. I checked the code and it indicated EGR flow insufficient . I replaced my egr valve but it did not stop the code from comming on. I read where the passage way could be blocked. So as I replaced the egr valve I checked the passage way leading twords the motor. I stuck a piece of coat hanger about 6 inches into the opening and it seemed to be clear. Did I check deep enough and did I check in the right way. Also if it is not obstructed what else could be causing EGR flow to be insufficient ? Your help will be appreciated.

Re: code reads : EGR flow insufficient ?

If the EGR valve is ON the intake manifold, the flow restriction is not IN the intake, it's OUTside the EGR.

Unless there is so much carbon fouling in the intake that the EGR diaphragm isn't exposed to vacuum.

Re: code reads : EGR flow insufficient ?

Yes it can be restricted in the intake, the upper.Pull the throttle body and you can see the egr port plugged up with carbon which has to be cleaned out.I seen this today,a 2001 Lumina with that code and it had the 3100,pulled the throttle body and the egr passage was plugged right up with carbon which the EGR valve was bad too.Someone at GM should be shot for the 2000 and up EGR valves! They never thought of this: if it is not broken,do not fix it.There was nothing wrong with the 1996 to 1999 EGR valves, which are easy to replace.

Re: code reads : EGR flow insufficient ?

The PCM uses MAP sensor vacuum signal to test EGR efficency. If there are any vacuum leaks in the tubing supplying the MAP (which branches off the t-body), it will trip this code. It is very rare that this code actually involves any problem with the EGR valve itself.

You (GM) have to keep people in the dark to control them ( their wallets, of mechanics, consumers).

Once they (mech's, consumers) learn you (GM), or your stuff, they don't need you anymore.

And of course, if it's still workin' properly, they don't need you (GM).

Someone at my church last night said they didn't want to know something about computers, and didn't want to learn it either.

Sad...
