Question Sil-Eighty project/ Lots of Q's

First off I'm new to this forum

Ok, I would like to build a Sil-Eighty using a U.S. 240sx. I have lots of experiance with working on or building engines. Not so much experiance with body panels and such. without further ado, here are the questions.

1) $$COST$$ How much would it cost to build one of these? Excluding price for a 240sx.

2) How many man hours does conversion take once you have all the parts?

3) Is there ANY CUSTOM FRABRICATION for the body panels that is needed? if so what kind, and how hard was it?

4) *ENGINE* How well does the SR20DET motor fit in the 240sx? Is there less room to work on motor once intsalled compared to stock 240 motor? Is there CUSTOM FRABRICATION needed here at all?

5) I have heard that everything for these conversions is just bolt on. But I have worked on alot of cars and NOTHING ever just bolts together. So what are all the dark secrets and shortcuts for building a SIL-EIGHTY?

Thanks Alot!!
Nick

well it depends on how much you want to do. There are a ton of things you could change on it from the front end conversion, to the engine, all the way down to japanese vin plates.... I'm guessing that you dont want to go that far though. check out www.unstable-hybrids.com and they have the pieces for the front end conversion along with the sr's if you want to buy one of those also. there are many other sites to buy sr's from and they can easily be found here in this forum.

2) How many man hours does conversion take once you have all the parts?
If your just doing the front end, then you should be able to get it on in a day.

3) Is there ANY CUSTOM FRABRICATION for the body panels that is needed? if so what kind, and how hard was it?
check out this site for instructions on how to do this conversion http://sr20.hybrids.jp/installations...ont/index.html

4) *ENGINE* How well does the SR20DET motor fit in the 240sx? Is there less room to work on motor once intsalled compared to stock 240 motor? Is there CUSTOM FRABRICATION needed here at all?
no custom fabrication and the motor bolts right in using either stock KA mounts or SR mounts. just use whichever are in better shape. check out the faq at www.srswap.com for more info on this swap.

5) I have heard that everything for these conversions is just bolt on. But I have worked on alot of cars and NOTHING ever just bolts together. So what are all the dark secrets and shortcuts for building a SIL-EIGHTY?
It will all bolt together since it is the same chassis. just check the sites i posted above for more info

SIZE=4]welcome!![/size]

well i can help with some of your questions

they sell kits on-line do turn a 89-93 240sx h\b (180sx) into a s-il 180
these kits include front hood, fenders, bumper and s-15 lights
those are the components needed for the extreior.

now for your engine question

the sr20det will fit into a 240sx wid no problems,
the sr20det and the ka24de motor is the same basic size and layout,
now with the sr20det motor they are 3 different motors
the:
s-13 sr20det-205hp - $2500-$3500
s-14 sr20det-215hp(i think) - $3000-$4000
s-15 sr20det-240hp(i think) - $4000-$5000

i recomend the s-13 motor even tho ti has the least hp it you modify this motor it will have the same if not more hp as a modifyed s-14,s-15 motor.
the only real difference is that the s-14 and s-15 sr20det have a better turbo design and the s-15 sr20det uses a t-28 instead of the t-25 used in the s-13 and s-14 sr20det, also the injector varries wit each motor,
but like i said once u modify thhe motor is all the same,

i hope i.ve helped in some ways

i plan to do the same when i get a car
good luck

The S14 SR uses a T28 compressor also.

Also the S13 SR can flow better than the S14 and S15 SR because of it's high port head allowing a straight shot for the air to the combustion chamber. This is also the reason why the S13 SR has a 7500 RPM redline while the S14 and S15 SR both have 7200 RPM redlines.

we really need an FAQ in this forum concerning SR20DET installation and other questions like that. it seems every single day i come in here, there's someone else asking the exact same questions that we've answered 100 times over and over again. i'm not blaming the newbs, although they could take a bit more initiative from time to time to search the forum for the topic they need.

I want the "Tail happy", "Snap Oversteer" drift car conversion. S13 front end on a '90 240sx with the SR20DET Redhat motor I do have another question though.

:Are parts OEM and after-market readaly availabe in the US? I dont want to have to pay shipping from japan every time I need a part.

BTW: any body have pics of their own SIL-EIGHTY? Would really like to see what you have done with yours.

Thanks
Nick

we COULD make an FAQ...but it would be hard to keep it up as we'd need to bring a mod in here to sticky it for us etc. etc. whatever. we could try.

anyways, i'm shaking my fist at you for stealing my Sileighty idea, bignick. lol just joking, the more the merrier.

So your saying S13 silvia headlights bolt right on to the S13 chassis that previous had "Pop-up" headlights? Wouldnt there be a cutout for the lights instead of a silvia shaped bracket :o

i applied...

SiR: the frame is the exact same. with the Silvia front end, there's a bracket you need to purchase with the rest of the parts that holds the fixed headlights in place.

i also applied but i dont think im worthy of that position cause im still a newbie but i think it would be a geat idear to have a faq in the 240sx forum because it is true that almost everyday some one comes in and asks the same questions about the sr20det motor and the swap.
So a faq will be great!
