Bad Fuel Smell

I bought a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo LS 3.2L 2 wheel drive 5 speed that was owned by an older lady and is in very good shape with 124,150 miles on the ODO. Ok The Rodeo seems to get good gas maileage. It doesn't smoke. The truck seems to have plenty of power and I enjoy running through the gears. So here is the problem. After sitting for a few minutes i smell raw gas coming from under the hood. Some times are worse than others. I replaced the fuel cap and thought I had fixed it . And go figure it started again and I did trace it to the strongest point and it was coming from where the air cleaner attachs to the intake plenum. But this vehicle has thrown no check engine lights and otherwise runs so quit you can hardly hear it. Also no smell around the canister. Please help..

Question Re: Bad Fuel Smell

if your smelling gas it should hesatate when taking off because it would be sucking air i would think? it would seem to show on plugs? have you checked the fuel presure?

Re: Bad Fuel Smell

I am telling you I just parked this thing 2 hours ago and I went outside and it is still semi strong and a hint of it in the cab but it runs next to perfect. Does it need a fuel treatment? Clogged injectors or leaking around them? And no I have not checked the fuel pressure.

Re: Bad Fuel Smell

yes you can try that. i use sea foam and other use lukas and i'd check air filter and leave it opened to see if will evaporate and leave air filter out.and also check and see what plugs look like.

Re: Bad Fuel Smell

Ok, I will try that. I just replaced the air filter so I don't think that is the problem except for like you said to see if it will evaporate. I will check and change the plugs tomorrow.

Re: Bad Fuel Smell

Ok I took it to a family friend who is a mechanic and he found the port to check the fuel pressure was loose. He concluded that he has seen many vehicles smell like gas before with this cap loose. And guess what? Now the gas smell has gone away.
