Watch the exhaust as the motor is started COLD - make sure COLD. Make notes.
Put a compression gauge in all 8 holes, and measure the squeeze. Make notes.
Run the engine at least 15 minutes, drive it at highway speed, and then jump the ALDL to check for codes. No SES light? Do it anyway. Make notes.
Then make some more notes, so you can save some C-notes!
