Oil Change recommendations
OK, I have the GTS manual but am looking for some recommendations for type, weight and such. I am due a full fluid change on motor, transmission, and diff. What do you guys recommend? I have the 4.6 motor as well. Seems like I recall Gary recommending something like 5W 30 for these motors? I also am going to try the tranny change hoping it will help #3 engage easier. Has anyone used the Redline ShockProof for this? So, let me hear it for motor, transmission and diff please.....

Re: Oil Change recommendations
I just wanted to keep it simple so I put Amsoil 5w40 in my 5.0 seeing as that's what I run in my Corvette. My log book had everything from 5w30 to 15w50 in it ranging from quaker state to mobil 1 etc.
For the trans I'm running Amsoil sythetic manual synchromesh trans fluid and Amsoil Severe Duty duty 75w110 for the rear. I changed it all last fall and will change it all over the winter. I figure I'll swap fluids once a year.

Re: Oil Change recommendations
In my book, thinner motor oil is good for increasing gas milage. Since I'm not really worried about that facet while racing, I use 10- or 20-50 in my 5.0 l motor. At the elevated oil temps that we see while racing, I think the heavier viscosities protect better. I do change the motor oil after about three hours on run time. If the oil starts to break down, then at least it has fresh fliud pretty often.
I use stand syenthic transmission and differential fluids, and I change them during the off seanson. I don't know the viscosity of the AFT, and I think the diff gear oil was 80-90.

Re: Oil Change recommendations
^ FYI I've never seeon over 230 oil temps in my Panoz and that was at Viperdays with around 100 degree ambient temps! They stay downright cold compared to a Corvette.

Re: Oil Change recommendations
I agree on the oil temps. Here in Texas during August, I never got over 230 degrees. That is on TWS which is very hot and fast (1/2 mile front straight). I also heard that the 4.6 runs very hight pressures cold and not to go too heavy on the viscosity for risk of damaging the oil bypass and such.

Re: Oil Change recommendations
^ That's why we said F the 4.6 and went 5.slow
I had a '97 Cobra for 5 years. Motor is huge, parts are expensive, and aftermarket selection is far less. Too much complicated crapola on that motor. But that said I always ran 5w30 mobil 1 in my Cobra.

I suppose it's the start up pressures that cause the problems. Good to know about the 4.6. I ran 20-50 in my '02 Z06 to combat the high temps. I would see 300 F on a regular basis, and have to slow down to allow the motor to cool down. I hope the 5.0 likes the 20-50 because it just got another fresh 6 qts.
