98 Escort Lower Radiator Hose Removal and Replacement

Hi all. I'm trying to replace my lower radiator hose, but there isn't any room. The hose connects to the intake manifold (I think that's it), which is surrounded by belts to the left, the A/C compressor below, and alternator above. Thus, there is no room to get a wrench in to remove the clamp.

Any ideas on how to get it off? How could I break the clamp without damaging the fittings? Thanks

I'm not sure how the '98 is set up but you might be able to use a socket, swivle (u-joint) and a long extension on a ratchet. I think that's how I got mine off ('93).

Ford usually installs those dreaded clamps that you must squeeze together... I hat those things. Whatever you do to get it off, replace it with a common screw type clamp and it will be easier in the future.

FYI, the hose goes from the radiator to the water pump, not the intake manifold.

Basically, you just need to remove whatever is in your way. Take the belt off and you might have enough wiggle room... If you haven't already, try removing the wheel and see if you can get a better angle on everything.

Channellocks or very long needlenose pliers. Sometimes the harware store has cheapies in bins of China tool specials. That's where I've gotten some VERY convenient tools for less and one or two uses. Also a pair of bent tip needle nose are more handy than you would ever think until you try it and wonder why didn't you get one sooner and why you've been trying to work without it. I love mine!
