antifreeze smell ram 1500

2001 dodge ram 1500 v8. Getting antifreeze smell in cab, no sign of leak on floorboards but loosing small amount of antifreeze can't find out where. Had dodge dealer look at. he found crack in thermostat housing replaced but i still have problem. he could not find any other leaks at that time. Water pump started leaking replaced but still have the leak and smell. I still think heater core has to be leaking but do not find normal signs of that. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Any steaming of the windshield at all ? It could still be a pin hole in the heater core, or even the radiator. And it's evaporating before you can see it. Also check the heater hoses where they connect to the core at the firewall.

also check the gasket at the thermostat. I had a bad smell of antifreeze and could not find any leaks my plenum wasn't too bad and had no signs of antifreeze anywhere. Turned out my gasket went bad and it was burning off.

Re: antifreeze smell ram 1500

i had the same problem, but i could hear sloshing when the vehicle was started, if the fluid was lower than normal. right inside the dash. i pulled the entire dash out, which btw is a job. and removed the heater core. it was definatly linking, because it had signs down the side of it. i replaced it for under 100 dollars, and haven't had a problem since. it is a project to replace, just to give a heads up. this is why most mechanics charge about roughly 600 to change it out. lol. you literally remove everything, and unplug all electircal components in the dash. if you decide to do this, i will give you some pointers. just leave a reply, and i can basically walk you through the steps and save you 500 dollars.

I am needing to replace mine. I have a 3500, I can't imagine it's that different than yours. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. Gary
